William W.'s Essay

“My dream for the future is…”
I know for a fact that I have the power to change the present. We all do. With the power to change the present comes the power to fashion the future. It doesn’t take much, just a little bit of determination and tenacity. It won’t be a perfect future, but it will certainly be closer to the ideal future of my dreams. In my perfect future, my survival is no longer dependent on enzymes to digest my food. Nor am I reliant on antibiotics to fight my infections. I could go anywhere, do anything, without the constant nagging of disability in my lungs and stomach. In the present, however, I am constrained. I am completely reliant upon other people to research and produce my medicine. So how do I begin the journey to the future of my dreams? I contribute to research studies. I stay on top of my health. I do my therapy vest three times a day and I exercise every day at the gym. All of these things have increased my independence and my ability to travel where I want. It is not a perfect future that I am creating, but it is the next best thing, and I am enjoying the journey. To dream implies impossibility and I don’t believe in the impossible.
