Sara S.'s Essay

Never living without CF (I was diagnosed at two weeks), it’s difficult for me to pinpoint exactly what CF has taught me. Has it taught me that life can be challenging? Yes. Have I learned not to attach all hope and happiness to a single event? Definitely. More than that, it has taught me how precious life is and to appreciate everyday.

My father is a true extreme optimist. When I was stressed with tests or classes (not uncommon during those wonderful high school years), my dad’s response would be “relax, enjoy it.” When my health took a turn for the worst, dad said “smile, be happy.” I like to think that this advice is as the heart of what CF has taught me. Not only have I learned that living means enjoying life fully, but also that the enjoyment can come from the simplest and most unexpected places. A dinner conversation with my parents and sister, the way the light filters through the leafy branches of trees, even the crackle of a late-night campfire. Being unable to enjoy these little wonders at various times has taught me to treasure every second of life I am lucky enough to have. I find myself utterly content sitting in my backyard with a book, listening to the wind rustle leaves, watching my dog chase squirrels while skillfully holding a giant stick. CF has allowed me to develop a unique view of the world, one that helps me appreciate life.
