Jojuan J.'s Essay

Living with Cystic Fibrosis
Living with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) has taught me patience, endurance, and dedication. And as a result, I am aware of two valuable lessons: 1) I can be a successful student despite my illness; and, 2) I can be a contributor to the society in which I live despite my illness.
While in school, I struggled through the illness of CF. However, I managed to maintain a 3.3 GPA. In addition, I was a member of the football, tennis, and basketball teams. I was determined that my illness would not become a ‘crutch’ for me. Thus, I explored opportunities beyond school, as well.
I maintained part-time employment to assist with the financial responsibilities of the family, as I am the younger of two children from a single parent home. I also participated in various church functions and volunteered at the Petersburg Recreational Department, where I enjoyed working with the youth. My desire is to continue giving back to my community.
I aspire to be an example for the youth by allowing them to see that one can overcome any obstacle with determination and the presence of God in your life. My future plan is to attend ECPI and major in computer engineering, to one day own a radio station, and to produce a television show.
It is my sincere hope that I be considered for the SolvayCARES Scholarship and provided the opportunity to illustrate that people with Cystic Fibrosis can be successful in their endeavors.
